I’ve had some unique experiences with God’s glory over the past few years. I figured I’d do a study on the glory of God and share some things I’ve learned. I’ll be gathering some resources and answering some common questions in this post.
There are several attributes of God’s glory we can see in the Bible and in modern-day church services. One of the attributes is that God’s glory often appears as a glistening glory cloud. In the old testament, there were time’s God’s glory would descend in the form of a cloud (Exodus 40:34-35).
The thick and manifested presence of God was so strong it kept Moses from being able to enter into the tent of meeting. There are several other times in the Bible and in the current day church where God’s glory has been manifested in powerful ways. One example in which there is video proof is the Bethel glory cloud. I’ll include the video in this post but first, let’s look at what a glory cloud is and where it’s mentioned in the Bible.
What is a Glory Cloud like?
A cloud is how God oftentimes chooses to manifest his glory. We will look at what the Bible says about glory clouds in just a second—but first what is a glory cloud like in real life? There are several videos on YouTube where an actual glory cloud was captured on camera. I’ll link to some below.
God didn’t just release his glory in the Old Testament and then stop after Jesus. There are many modern-day examples of glory clouds being manifested in church meetings. The pentecostal movement can be traced back to the Azusa Street revival in California 100 years ago. It’s reported that there was a glistening glory cloud over a certain building they had meetings in for 3 years.
Ezekiel describes a great cloud with glistening metal in it (Ezekiel 1:1). I’ve heard that there is often a glitter or glistening gold in modern-day glory clouds when they appear as well.
Bethel Glory Cloud
In 2011 Bethel experienced its first manifestation of a “glory cloud.” WPFilms was given footage of the cloud to use in one of their upcoming documentaries but they never did—so they released it on Youtube.
Bill Johnson said he wanted to keep quiet about it. He didn’t want to draw unnecessary attention to it. He later talked openly about it and shared how, at first, he wasn’t sure if it was ok to stare at it and stand around and take pictures. He came to the conclusion “that we don’t seek the signs but we don’t ignore them either.” He went on to describe how dumb it would be to have a glory cloud manifest and to not allow yourself to look at it because it would be too distracting.
I’ve included the video released by WPFilms below. This is real. There are many websites that attack Bethel (and IHOPKC). Whenever God is doing something miraculous —with every move of God—satan raises up persecution and opposition against it—sadly he sometimes does this through believers.
Is a Glory Cloud in the Bible?
Yes. the Bible has quite a few mentions of God’s glory descending in the form of a cloud. There are many mentions in the Old Testament and some mentions in the New Testament. When Peter, James, and John were with Jesus during his transfiguration he was glowing and Elijah & Moses appeared to all of them—a cloud came and overshadowed them.
The 3 were afraid to enter the cloud. The voice of the Father spoke out of it. This was not an ordinary cloud as you would see in the sky. This was a glory cloud.
As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. Luke 9:34
Jesus was also taken up to heaven in a cloud. I think was also a glory cloud and not an ordinary cloud. The Word says that in the same way, Jesus left he will return (in a cloud). I don’t think it would be as spectacular if Jesus were riding on a nice white fluffy cloud. The Word says he wraps himself with light as with a garment. He is shining a brilliant. He will be coming on a cloud of glory in power and ready for war.
And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Luke 21:27
There were also times in the Old Testament when God’s glory appeared as a cloud. The Israelites followed a cloud by day and a fire by night. Moses, in Exodus, wasn’t able to enter the tent of meeting at once point because the glory cloud descended was too thick. Also, Ezekiel had encounters with God’s glory in the form of a cloud.
Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. And Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. - Exodus 40:34-35 ESV
As I looked, behold, a stormy wind came out of the north, and a great cloud, with brightness around it, and fire flashing forth continually, and in the midst of the fire, as it were gleaming metal Ezekiel 1:4 ESV
when the man went in, and a cloud filled the inner court. And the glory of the Lord went up from the cherub to the threshold of the house, and the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was filled with the brightness of the glory of the Lord Ezekiel 10:3-4
How to Get into the Glory of God
I think it’s interesting that when the glory of God descended in the Old Testament and the priests were unable to stand to minister—it says they were all singing, playing instruments, and worshiping with one voice. There is something that happens in the spirit, that attracts God’s glory when his people are in unity. If we want the glory of God in our churches and in our personal lives we must embrace the body of Christ and true community.
and it was the duty of the trumpeters and singers to make themselves heard in unison in praise and thanksgiving to the Lord…the house of the Lord, was filled with a cloud, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of God. 2 Chronicles 5:13-14 ESV
On the Day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit was poured out, the believers were also gathered together in unity. Jesus told them to wait together for the promise of the Holy Spirit. The reoccurring theme here is unity.
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Acts 2:1-2 ESV
Our body is a temple of glory. 1 Corinthians instructs us to flee from sexual immorality because our bodies are not our own. I believe that sexual immorality defiles a person’s body. Our bodies are supposed to be a temple of the Holy Spirit. If you are engaged in certain practices that have demonic roots then I believe you are prohibiting yourself from entering into the fullness of God’s glory and what he has for you.
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Jesus also taught that the eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is good your whole body will be filled with light (glory) and if your eye is bad your body will be filled with darkness. We need to be careful about what we set in front of our eyes. We need to walk in purity and holiness. God wants us to be Holy. We are to be Holy as He is Holy.
If you want to get the glory of God onto your life—you have to live a life that invites him in. Live a life of worship and seek God with everything you have. Consecrate your life to God to be used for noble purposes. Spend time in community with other believers who carry the glory. It will come upon your life if you keep seeking the person of Jesus!
How To Maintain The Glory Of God
Works of the flesh will hinder the glory of God from moving in your life and disconnect you from being able to receive from him. Sin separates us from God. Selfishness separates us from God and from other believers. The people who are walking in the flesh cannot please God.
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21 ESV
The says that they WILL NOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD. This is not referring to a kingdom you enter into upon death but a kingdom you were born into when you put your faith in Jesus and were born into. Sin will cut off God’s glory from flowing in your life. You cannot manifest heaven on earth if you are involved in these things.
If you want to be able to maintain the presence and glory of God in your life then you must live a consecrated, sanctified life—that is set apart for God. Live in purity and holiness. Those who have clean hands and pure hearts are able to see God! When we see God we become like him—we are portals/gates that release God’s glory in the earth. Pursue the presence of Jesus with everything you have; your entire being, and don’t quit. Pursue him for decades. You will enter into the glory and be able to maintain it—if you keep pressing in—and don’t quit.
When The Glory of God is Upon You What Does it Feel Like?
The first time I began to experience the Glory of God was during a time of extended prayer and fasting. When I first moved to IHOPKC in Kansas City in 2017 I went on an extended fast and I was in such a desperate situation, with no permanent place to live at the time, I locked myself in the prayer room for 10+ hours a day—at least the first few weeks.
I had an encounter in which light and glory came upon me in such intensity it caused my hands to close (I had them held up high in worship). I couldn’t open my hands for 20 minutes—at least it was hard to. I had power all over me and in me. It was difficult to stand. It felt amazing and terrifying at the same time—the fear of the Lord is a good thing. He is so powerful our bodies aren’t able to experience the fullness of his glory or we would die. Like the guy who died in the Old Testament when he accidentally touched the ark of the covenant.
Anyway—to end that story—I went into the prophecy rooms the next day and a lady had a vision of me—and in the vision, she said that she saw light come out of each one of my fingers. The Lord confirmed to me what he had done and it explained to me why my hands had closed. She told me it was an anointing to pray for people as an evangelist and to release light in the darkness.
Since this time I have been able to discern and feel the glory vibrations in my body. If someone has been in the glory I will either see it or feel it on them. To me, I have to slow down to experience it. If I am busy working and trying to get things done and I come into the presence of someone who has just been in the glory I notice they are very slowed down; calm; relaxed. I’m convinced I’d experience more if I could just force myself to sit still for a few hours in the prayer room. Sometimes that’s hard for me to do.
Glory & Signs & Wonders
There are certain times when the glory manifests during a meeting or church service and signs and wonders follow. I was at a prophetic conference in Pennsylvania in 2007 and Patricia King was speaking the last night—at the end of the service jewels fell down from heaven. A lady who was sitting in front of me showed me the once she had received. It was a new experience for me—for sure.
I was skeptical back then but in the 13 years since God has encountered me in so many other ways—I’m not skeptical anymore! This was the only service I’ve been in where this happened but they have happened in many meetings since. I’ve heard stories from all over the world about jewels manifesting, gold dust covering people’s skin, people getting gold fillings in their teeth, and even angels feathers manifesting.
There is no list to what God is able to do. Signs and wonders follow the glory. We don’t chase after signs and wonders—we chase after God—but when glory, signs, and wonders are poured out—I’d like to be there for that.
Prayer for the Manifestation of God’s Glory
Father, I thank you for the blood of your son Jesus. I thank you for the indwelling Spirit that lives inside of me. I thank you that my body is a temple for your glory to dwell. Lord, I ask you to cleanse me. Cleanse my mind. Cleanse my will. Cleanse my emotions. I choose to look upon you and live. I thank you that those who look to you become radiant.
I ask you to release your light and manifestations of your glory into my life. Open up you ancient gates—that the King of glory would come in. I look to you glorious one. High and lifted up. Release the manifestation of your glory in my inner man, in my body, in my soul, in every crevice of my heart. Release light into every area in me that is currently in darkness.
Let your light come to expose what is in my heart. Let light run through me. Increase light around me that pushes back darkness. Open a portal of glory around my life. Help me to walk in a manner that is worthy of the gospel. Help me to live in humility, purity, and righteousness.
I choose to be holy as you are holy. I choose to lay down my life for your sake. I thank you that I am crucified with Christ and I can enter in through the new and living way that Jesus opened for me through his flesh. I enter into your presence and your glory by the blood of the lamb. Increase your glory in my life.
In Jesus’ name Amen.
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh Hebrews 10:19-20
These are just some attributes of God’s glory I’ve either experienced myself, found in the Bible, or have heard of other people experiencing. I encourage you to spend some time on your knees in prayer and seek the presence and glory of God.
