Before I go to bed on most nights I pray over my room, apply the blood of Jesus and ask God to release the atmosphere of heaven. Since I was a child I’ve been attacked by demonic spirits at night—thankfully, through much practice, I’ve learned how to pray for spiritual protection while sleeping.
How To Pray For Spiritual Protection Before Bed
There are a few things I do before bed. It doesn’t look the same every night but here is a list of some of what I do.
- Ask God to release angels
- Anoint room with oil
- Pray in the spirit
- Read God’s word out loud
- If attacked command spirit to leave in the name of Jesus and return to sleep.
This is just a glimpse but I’ll get into more detail in just a second…
Why Do We Need To Pray For Spiritual Protection While Sleeping?
I believe we are the most vulnerable to the attack of demonic spirits while we are sleeping. We are not conscious during sleep but our spirits are still awake and active. You have an enemy of your soul. He is very real and exists in the unseen realm. Satan’s kingdom has a hierarchy of demonic forces. They are real and they have unique attacks and asignments against our individual lives.
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8 ESV
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12 ESV
We have no reason to fear though! The enemy has been defeated through Jesus, the son of God, sacrificing himself for us on the cross and defeating the power of the enemy.
He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. Colossians 2:15
We do, however, have to step into our authority. We have to take possession of our inheritance. Just because Jesus paid the price for us and triumphed over darkness doesn’t mean that we don’t have to do our part. We have to stand in our authority and use it. What is the point of authority if it’s not exercised?
I believe many sleep problems are the result of demonic attacks during the night; which could be avoided if we take our authority over the enemy and invite the Holy Spirit & angels into our room—before we fall asleep. It’s worth praying for a few minutes before bed. Many nightmares, night terrors, and episodes of sleep paralysis could possibly be avoided.
Close Any Open Door That May Be Giving The Enemy Access
You can have open doors in your life that invite evil spirits and give them permission to torment you. This can be any number of things from sexual relationships, soul ties, drugs, occult involvement, etc. The first step in closing open doors is to confess your sin to Jesus, repent, and ask him to cleanse you. To repent is to change your my about something and to decide not to do it any longer. Ask Holy Spirit if you have any open doors and invite him into those areas and ask him to cleanse you.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9
Take Authority in Jesus’ name
Take authority over your sleeping space in the name of Jesus. Command any assignments of the enemy to leave and bind them up. Let the enemy know you are standing in your authority as a child of God and not going to put up with any attacks he may try to throw at you.
Expect him to test you the first few nights/weeks of you doing this if you’ve never done this before and currently have demonic entities attacking you at night. The first time I got delivered from an evil spirit it attacked me for nearly two weeks afterward in multiple dreams per night. Each time I stood on my authority and rebuked the enemy. I didn’t back down until it knew I was serious and stopped bothering me after two weeks. They need to know you are serious and won’t back down. You aren’t dealing with a generic evil force you are dealing with a demonic personality.
Attract Angels With Worship Music
Ok. Let me say this. We do not worship angels but we can have encounters with them and they can make themselves known to us and speak at times. Sometimes you can feel them, see them, hear them, etc. Angels are created beings just like humans. They are all throughout the Old Testament & New Testament. John, while on the Island of Patmos, was so overcome at the presence of an angel that he fell down to worship the angel—but the angel corrected him.
Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. Revelation 19:10 ESV
They are also attracted to an atmosphere of worship. Angels are workers. They partner with God and with us through our prayers—although we seldom are aware of this. They listen to our prayers and act accordingly. If the Holy Spirit inside of us inspires us to pray something we speak the prayer out loud, release the Word, and angels carry out the will of God on the earth—that we just prayed out loud. Angels work with us.
Invite the presence of God into your bedroom before you go to sleep and spend some time in worship and praying in tongues if you have your prayer language.
Anoint Your Bedroom With Oil
Every once in a while I use a bottle of anointing oil or olive oil to anoint my room with oil. In the Bible, oil is symbolic of the Holy Spirit and people ; objects were anointed with oil as a sign of them being consecrated and set apart to God. Another way of looking at this is you want to consecrate your sleeping space.
Begin by dabbing your finger in the oil. Anoint the headboard on your bed, your pillow, windows, doorposts, and anything Holy Spirit may highlight to you. Plead the blood of Jesus over everything while you are doing it. Invite the Holy Spirit. Welcome him and ask him to release the atmosphere of Heaven. I realize this is a list post—but there are no formulas here—what I am suggesting has to be done in a relationship with God.
Pray In The Spirit
Praying in the tongues is powerful. I’ve experienced tremendous breakthrough by praying in tongues for long periods of time. It has been the gateway that has launched me into several significant encounters with God. Whenever I experience warfare, whether it’s at night or during the day, I make it a point to spend at least 15 minutes praying in the Spirit.
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Romans 8:26 ESV
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:4 ESV
The person that has influenced me the most to pray in tongues is Corey Russell. There is something he’s said at conferences that stuck with me. He also mentions it in his book. Instead of trying to explain it here is an excerpt:
It was the reality of spiritual warfare that first propelled me into the practice of praying in tongues for extended periods of time.…we entered into a season of constant warfare…I didn’t know what to do to break the cycle. In frustration, I would pace throughout our apartment praying loudly in tongues until I began to feel peace in my own spirit and in the household. Sometimes this only took 20 minutes, and sometimes it took two hours, but in the process, I learned to discern the presence of breakthrough.– The Glory Within
Speak God’s Word
I believe that one of the greatest offensive weapons we have in the spirit is speaking the word of God out loud. Declaring it out loud over our lives and the lives of the people and nations we are fighting in prayer for. The Word is an offensive weapon.
the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God Ephesians 6:17
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 ESV
In the book of Revelation, we see that when Jesus speaks swords come out of his mouth. God’s Word is like a sword. It’s Sharpe. It’s offensive. It cuts’ It divides. I believe that when we speak God’s Word out loud something like swords comes out of our mouths and pierces through the darkness. It is a direct frontal assault against evil spirits, powers, and principalities.
There have been several seasons I was under a lot of warfare. I’d spend hours declaring God’s word over my life. Choosing to put my faith in what his Word says instead of the way my situation looks. This has often gotten me breakthrough.
On one occasion a few years ago during a time of much prayer I woke up one night and seemingly without any forethought or control over what I was doing—as I am laying on my back—I open my eyes and point at a principality in the sky and I declare with much force “Stop your accusations against God’s elect. Stop your accusations against God’s elect.” I declare this twice and each time I do an arrow comes out of my heart and pierces the principality in the sky above me.
Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:11 ESV
Then the LORD said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it.” Jeremiah 1:12 ESV
Hopefully, now you have some idea on how to pray for spiritual protection before bed. I hope something in this post helped you in some way. If so, leave me a comment and let me know!
