Why You Have Hot Hands During Prayer | The Laying on of Hands

I started experiencing physical manifestations of heat in my body in 2016. Since then I’ve tried to develop somewhat of an understanding of what’s happening. If you’ve ever had your hands heat up during prayer, intercession, or worship then this post may answer some questions.

Having hot hands during prayer, if you are a believer in Christ, can be a supernatural manifestation of the Holy Spirit or angels. It is often an indication that a healing gift is being activated in you or imparted to you. If this happens to you ask the Holy Spirit if there is someone specific you should lay hands on and pray for. It is common for people with certain gifts of healing to experience hot hands. This is part of the ministry of the laying on of hands.

If you are not a follower of Jesus and have not had an experience in which you’ve been born again and encountered Jesus as the one true Living God–then hot hands during any type of prayer or spiritual practice is possibly demonic in nature. This is especially true if you have been involved in the occult or eastern spiritual practices.

The ministry of the laying on of hands has roots in the early church and is often done for healing, prophecy, and imparting spiritual gifts. Paul laid hands on Timothy and imparted a supernatural gift of the Holy Spirit–that would not have been imparted if Paul had not prayed/prophesied and physically laid his hands on Timothy.

Jesus, when he was healing the sick oftentimes laid hands on people and they were healed. We are spirit, soul, and body. There is something special about physical touch, spiritual impartation, and how gifts of healing operate. We see this throughout the Bible. If you are alone and your hands start feeling hot during prayer then you should still ask the Holy Spirit if there is anyone specifically that he wants you to pray for at a later time.

Physical Manifestations During Prayer

Physical manifestations of the Holy Spirit and Angels can happen frequently to prophetic people and intercessors. There are various types of manifestations that have been recorded and it’s been a controversial subject for quite a while in the body of Christ. Physical manifestations, especially of fire, go back to the book of Acts and many Fathers and Mothers of the faith have written about them; including Theresa of Avila. & Madam Guyon.

The Old Testament has a lot of accounts of the Holy Spirit or angels producing a physical manifestation in people. In 2 Chronicles the glory of God filled the temple in the form of a cloud. God’s presence was so strong that the priests could not stand to minister.

so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of God. - 2 Chronicles 5:14 ESV

Also, many angelic encounters in the Bible produced fear and trembling in the person receiving the visitation. In many of these stories, the Angel tells the person not to fear–which indicates the Glory they carried was terrifying to mortals not accustomed to it.

Would you consider sowing a gift into my ministry?

And behold, a hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. Daniel 10:10 ESV
And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. - Luke 1:30 ESV

Physical sensations are part of the Seer realm. If you frequently have hot hands during prayer and you haven’t heard from the Lord on what it means, specifically to you, then I encourage you to go on some form of fast and spend time in prayer asking the Lord to show you more. He is faithful to increase and give more as we ask for more and he always gives wisdom to those who ask. Sometime’s we don’t have wisdom on a particular matter because we don’t ask for it!

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. James 1:5 ESV

The fire of the Holy Spirit and of Angels

John the Baptist declared that Jesus would baptize his disciples with both the Holy Spirit and with Fire. The early church first experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the baptism of fire in the Upper Room. You can read about this in Acts 2. They also began to speak in other tongues and prophesying as the Holy Spirit gave them utterance.

And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit... Acts 2:3-4 ESV

A physical sensation of fire or wind can also signify the presence of angels. Angels work in partnership with the Holy Spirit to fulfill God’s purpose on the earth and are sent to serve people who put their faith in Jesus. They are mentioned all throughout both the Old and New Testament. They are not the Holy Spirit but they work with Him.

Of the angels, he says, “He makes his angels winds, and his ministers a flame of fire.” Hebrews 1:7 ESV

Impartation Through The Ministry of the Laying on Of Hands

God designed his church to function as a body would function. Every part of the church body needs the other members. The Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts as he wills and as he sees fit; this includes gifts of healing which is frequently ministered by placing hands on the person you are praying for. The ministry of the laying on of hands is demonstrated all throughout the New Testament.

Why do you experience hot hands during prayer?

There is something about physically laying hands on another person as the Holy Spirit leads–to receive supernatural impartation, spiritual gifts, the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and healing. Many people feel extreme heat in their hands; others feel electricity; others shake. There are a variety of physical manifestations of Holy Spirit impartation. A spiritual gift was imparted to Timothy through the laying on of hands by Paul and the elders in the church.

For this reason, I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands 2 Timothy 1:6
Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. 1 Timothy 4:14

The New Testament has many verses in which hands were laid on people by Jesus and the Apostles; to heal, pray, and to bless. Often, though not always, physical healing is directly associated with the laying on of hands in the New Testament. Hands must have been laid on people during prayer so frequently that Paul even instruction Timothy not to lay hands on any man hastily. We are spirit, soul, and body. Our spirits are closely knit to our bodies.

Then children were brought to him [Jesus] that he might lay his hands on them and pray. Mathew 19:13 ESV
...Paul visited him and prayed, and putting his hands on him, healed him. Acts 28:8 ESV
all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. Luke 4:40 ESV
Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands 1 Timothy 5:22 ESV

I hope this explains why you may have hot hands during your prayer time and experience spiritual heat in other locations on your body. These experiences fit under the Gift of Discernment in the Bible and are also considered to be part of the Seer realm–which is what this blog is primarily about. Ultimately, the Holy Spirit gives gifts as he wills. If he is giving you this gift, then ask him to reveal to you and he will. Our Father loves to give good gifts to his children–at least the ones who ask him (Mathew 7:11). I hope this helps!

  1. Woow!this has been extremely helpful.
I honestly could not understand what was happening to me.

  2. Thank you so much for this exposition. May God increase you in all ways.
Recently, I got fired up in my prayer life. My praying in tongues also increased. Each time I open my mouth to pray or l am listening to a sermon or worship song, I feel warm heat in my hands, but the heat is usually intense in my feet and it lasts longer in my feet than in my hands. In fact, I may not be praying but meditating on the word and still feel heat on my feet. Why do feel the heat in my feet. I can’t be laying my feet on people to heal or impart.
Right now, as I am typing this text, I am feeling intense heat in my feet. I am sure it is not a medical condition or some form of illness. Can you explain to me why I am having this kind of heat distribution?
Thank you once again for the article.

  3. Thank you so much for your help. this has made me understand more about the gift God bestowed upon me. I did see the results of praying for a few people but i was scared to continue laying hands on people because i wasn’t sure of what is happening to me myself.
The heat keeps growing. it started with only my hands and now i feel it in most parts of my body. The recent one is when i touch my knees the heat escalates but i still don’t understand what i should when that happens. i was just praying when that happens since i didn’t know it might mean i should lay hands on someone. I will start asking the Holy Spirit for guidance.

    God bless you
